Ms. Brenda Lee Washington was born November 27, 1947, in St. Louis, Mo. to the union of Pastor Percy L. Washington and Lula M. Washington. She was third child of five siblings. Brenda’s father Pastor Percy L. Washington, mother Lula M. Washington, two brothers, Percy and Richard, son Larry, daughter Deneen, and granddaughter LaMonda preceded her in death.
Brenda was educated in the St. Louis Public School System. She confessed her faith in God at an early age and was baptized at Peace Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. F.M. Vaughn. She was a member of the Youth Choir at Peace Baptist. She later united with New Morning Star MB Church under Rev W.O. Parker, where she was also in the Youth Choir. She was among the founding members of Faith MB Church in 1966. Later in life she joined Mt. Pleasant MB under the leadership of Rev. C. Shelton where she served on the Usher Board and Hospitality Ministry. She later reunited with Faith MB under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Theodore R. Williams, Jr., where she served as President of the Missionary Board.
As a teenager, Brenda was employed with Jewish Hospital Youth Corp., and later gained employment with the infamous Stix, Baer, and Fuller. In 1967 she began her career with the State Hospital and Hawthorn Youth Center where she remained until her retirement. Brenda married Larry Sipes, Sr., and to this union a son and daughter was born. In 2009 she married Leonard Steward. No children were born to this union.
Brenda transitioned from this life on Saturday, January 1, 2022, at Barnes Jewish Cancer Center at 8:35 A.M. She leaves to cherish her memories her Son Kenneth {Joyce} Brookins, Jr.; Seven grandchildren, Patrice, Daphne, Takenia, Kayla, Kenneth AKA ‘KJ’, Kailan, and Kennedy; Six Great- Grandchildren, Antonio, Bradley, Triniti, Armon, Trinton, and Emory; Two sisters Paulette and Janice {Fitzgerald}; A special friend who was more like a daughter, Ebony, who Brenda shared, “Thanks for being there and loving me”; and a host of beloved extended family and friends.
