Mrs. Nettie Small Obituary

Reflections of a Life Well-Lived

Nettie Eloise Small was born on June 8th, 1942, to the late Roscoe Dee and Nettie Thomason in Saint Louis, Missouri. Nettie was the last child born to Dee and Nettie, a brother and four sisters preceded her in death.

Nettie joined Central Baptist Church in 1949 under the late Reverend T.E. Huntley and spoke often of how her personal relationship with her church family played a pertinent role in instilling values and direction in her life.

Nettie was united in Holy Matrimony to Earl Floyd Small on September 12th, 1960.  Two children were born of this union, Robyn and Tiffany.  They celebrated almost 20 years of marriage until his passing on August 31, 1980.

Nettie attended and graduated from Sumner High School with the Class of 1962.  Following graduation, she worked for the Juvenile Court Division in the City of St. Louis.  She then became employed as a secretary at Washington University under the late Psychologist Robert Williams, the developer of Ebonics, and also a prominent architectural firm, The Fleming Corporation, for over 40 years.

Nettie was an avid bingo player. If you had a problem that needed solving, it had better not have been on one of her bingo days. There was a longstanding joke that when she passes away, that we are not to bury her on a bingo day, as she would not be there.

As a mother, Nettie was a constant source of support and guidance. She instilled in her children the values of integrity, empathy, and perseverance. She was their rock, always there to lend a listening ear or offer a comforting shoulder to lean on. Her love knew no boundaries, and her children were her pride and joy.

But it was as a grandmother, and great-grandmother that Nettie truly shined. She cherished the role of being a grandmother and “GG” and embraced it with open arms. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life, and she showered them with love, affection, and wisdom.

Nettie departed this life on March 30th, 2024, at home surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Today, as we say our final goodbyes, let us celebrate the remarkable life of Nettie. Let us remember her for the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the difference she made. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to us all.

Her memory will be cherished by her two daughters, Robyn Yvette, and Tiffany Lynn (Anthony); Six grandchildren Ashleigh, Bryant, De’von, Richard, Daryus, and Whitnei; Thirteen great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and her Bingo family.
