MATTIE RUTH WALKER was born in Merigold, Mississippi on August 17, 1936 to Ora Lee Grace and Milton Cummings. She was adopted and raised by her great uncle and aunt, Jeff and Eliza Fletcher.
As a child, she confessed her faith in Jesus Christ at St. Peter M.B. Church in Merigold, Mississippi and was baptized in the Sunflower River. She enjoyed reciting poems, planting flowers, singing praises to God and attending church events. In her golden years, she often exclaimed, "I have loved.Jesus all of my life". Mattie was a resident of Chicago, Illinois for 55 years. During that time, she established membership at three churches. She served in three ministries which she immensely enjoyed: Music, Ushers, and Beautification.
She was educated in the Mound Bayou, Mississippi school system and worked as a switchboard operator. In 1956, she married her childhood friend, Willie R. Walker. Later, they relocated to Chicago where she worked as an assistant teacher at Fermie Elementary School. However, with encouragement from dad, she resigned to care for her own children. Daddy felt no one would love, care for or protect their children as she would. From their union are seven children. Mom didn't hug much but often expressed, "I love all of my children I"
In August 2018, Mattie relocated to St. Louis, Missouri with her oldest daughter and joined Trinity Community Church, St. Peters, Missouri under the leadership of Willie D. Woodmore. She attended St. Elizabeth's Adult Daycare Center where she enjoyed daily prayer, devotion, Bible trivia and other social activities with her new found friends. Mom demonstrated the simplicity of prayer. She would pray short prayers throughout the day. No matter how she felt, she would thank God for another day. Even if we were running late for an appointment- there was no rushing mom -she would stop and pray. Mom was a praying mother.
She peacefully transitioned into eternity with her Lord and Savior on July 23, 2020 in St. Louis, Missouri with her daughter by her side.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 58 years, Willie R. Walker, two sisters, Bernice, Mary and her brother Milton, and two grandsons, Archie and Nkosi.
Memories of Mattie will be cherished by seven children: Madison (Rose); Milton [Carolyn]; Willie; Vera (Dale); Anthanette; Stanley (Elizabeth); Cheryl (Anthony); and her siblings,: Lucille, Melvin, America, Sharon, Marlon, Lisa, and Vincent; her grandchildren, great -grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving family and friends.
