Dorothy was born December 11, 1928, in Greenville, Mississippi, to the late James R. Rogers and the late Martha Lee. Her mother relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, when Dorothy was three months old. As a child, Dorothy attended the SLPS, where she graduated with honors. She later received a certificate in nursing as a practical nurse.
While Dorothy was pursuing her educational goals, she also met and married Leroy Darris, who also preceded her in death. To this union, ten children were born of which, five have preceded her in death: Leroy Darris, Jr., Reginald Darris, Carmen Bolar, Cedric Darris, and Eugene Darris.
Dorothy worked various jobs in the service and hospitality field. Dorothy served on the Board of Directors for Yeatman Health Center, she worked as a Scout Leader for Troop and Pack Post 135, and in 1996, Dorothy retired from St. Vincent DePaul, where she worked as a job counselor.
As a young lady, Dorothy always showed interest in her community and surrounding neighborhoods. This led to her life in politics, where she decided to run for Committee Woman in the 3rd Ward District. During this time, she befriended many well-known politicians within the St. Louis Area.
Later in Life, Dorothy became an entrepreneur. She’s owned numerous businesses, such as Dust to Dawn Janitorial Service, Nubian Eccentrics, and D&D Variety Shop, to name a few.
Dorothy was well loved and respected in the St. Louis Community. She is known for opening her doors to all and lending a helping hand to many. Dorothy had a huge heart and a willing spirit to help. She was the calming agent and matriarch in the family. Dorothy will forever live in our hearts.
She leaves to cherish her memories: five children, Sharon (Jerome) Fields, Pamela (Vernell) Brownlee, Maurice Darris, Julia (Dexter) White, Lois (Henry) Graham, and her “fur-baby” CeCe; 154 grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
