Doris Hicks Sykes-Fountain was born July 6, 1937 to the union of James and Rosa Hicks in Saint Louis, Missouri. Doris accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in Jesus Name and received the gift of the Holy Ghost while attending Lively Stone Church of God and in her later years became a member of the Death to Life Ministries. She was educated at Sumner High School in Saint Louis, Missouri where she graduated in 1956. She went on to become a Licensed Practical Nurse through the Missouri Nursing Association, working at St. Luke's hospital for over 45 years.
Mama Doris, was affectionately called to nurse everyone in her life often giving her last, but never forgetting to keep a record of it in her "little black book". Mama Doris was known for her grace, class, style, dignity, tenacity, and teaching her children and grandchildren the fundamental etiquette of using the proper utensils when fine dining, always looking your best and working hard until the job was done. In 1958, Mama Doris started her journey as a wife and devoted mother and of that union five children were born.
Mama Doris departed this life on Saturday, January 18, 2020. She was preceded in death by her loving mother and father James & Rosa Hicks, her sister, Jamesetta Hines, and her brother, William Hicks.
She leaves to cherish her legacy: former husband, Ulysses Sykes, oldest brother: Thomas Hicks (Ann); sons: Pastor Kelvin Sykes, Sr. (Kimberly) and Shedrick Sykes (Marprissa); daughters: Elder Kenna Sykes-Harper (Robert), Kendall Sykes-Harvey (Michael), and Lilly Fountain-Green; grandchildren whom she raised as her own, Kayan Sykes and Kelvin Marshall; grandchildren: Jennifer, Vanessa, Donita, Romon, Shawn, Kelvon (Jade), Kendall, Melody, Bruce, Kelvin, Kennan, Celebrity, Seychelle, Candace, Kimberly, Kristen, Shedriece, Talna, Danny, Kyara, Kennedi, Kavon, Kelvin, Karon, and more than 40 great-grandchildren. Mama Doris will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves to cherish a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, co-workers, and others. As well as her very special friends, Congresswoman Maxine Waters & Shirley Harvey.
